Taste Excerpt 1

I mentally stomped on the intimidation their perfection brought into my mind and said, “Excuse me.”
The group froze, startled by my words. The girls had their brows raised and the boys stopped mid-speech, mouths agape. They stared at me with eyes the shade of onyx stones.
I smiled and gave them a little wave.
The boy a step ahead of the rest recovered first. His stunning features went from shocked surprise to intense interest. He reminded me of a hawk eyeing its prey. I gulped.
“A Day Student,” he said, his eyes insolent and excited.
Something about the way he said “Day Student” made my stomach flip. “Excuse me?”
They snickered. The boys looked at each other while the girls continued to stare, muffling their laughter by delicate hands. I seemed to be the butt of some joke.
“You broke the rule.” The boy’s grin turned predatory.
The students formed a loose semi-circle in front of me. My gaze darted from face to face. Hunger filled their eyes. The image of lions about to chase down a gazelle came to mind. I mentally shook my head. I was in the mountains not the Serengeti for crying out loud.
I took a small step back and cleared my throat. “Can any of you give me a ride back to the dorms?”
The boy wagged his forefinger like a metronome. “Ah, that’s unfortunate for you.”
One of the girls pinched the bridge of her nose. “Eli, you can’t possibly—”
“It’s forbidden, Eli,” another boy interrupted, pronouncing the word “forbidden” like a curse.
The nervous murmur at the pit of my stomach grew louder. Six against one. Not good odds. Instinct told me to cut my losses and run. Bad enough I faced expulsion, now it seemed like weird, beautiful people who’d suddenly appeared on campus wanted to beat me up. No, scratch that. Judging from the way they studied me, beating me up wouldn’t satisfy them. Something more primal prowled behind their looks.
I definitely wasn’t going down without a fight. Years of self-defense and hand-to-hand combat classes had me prepared. While other children from rich and important families got bodyguards, I got defense training. But I think my father meant for my skills to go up against potential kidnappers, not against other students who may or may not be crazy. Oh God! Maybe I stepped into a parallel universe or something when I reentered Barinkoff.
“None of the students are supposed to be on campus,” I said. Then, realizing my mistake, I added, “Okay, I know I’m not supposed to be here either. If one of you gives me a ride back to the dorms, I won’t say anything about all this. Let’s pretend this never happened. I didn’t see you, you didn’t see me.”
“We’re not ordinary students,” Eli answered. “We’re the Night Students.”
He’d said “Night Students” like the words were capitalized. I didn’t know Barinkoff held classes at night. What was going on here?
Eli smiled with just one side of his mouth and said to the group, “She’s right, no one will have to know. We’re the only ones here. And it’s been so long, don’t you agree?”
The rest of them nodded reluctantly.
“What’s been so long?” I challenged. I fisted my hands, ready to put them up if any of them so much as twitched my way.
“Since the taste of real flesh passed through my lips,” Eli said. He came forward and took a whiff of me then laughed when I cringed.
“Flesh.” Yep, parallel universe.
“Yes,” he said. “And yours smells so fresh.”
Someone grabbed my shoulders from behind and yanked me back before I could wrap my mind around the meaning behind Eli’s words. In a blink, I found myself behind someone tall. Someone really tall. And quite broad. And very male.
I realized he wore the same clothes Eli and the other boys did. Not good. He was one of them. Although… I cocked my head, raking my gaze over him. He seemed born to wear the uniform, like he was the pattern everyone else was cut from. My eyes wandered to long, layered, blue-black hair tied at the nape by a silk ribbon. Even in dim light, his hair possessed a sheen akin to mercury.
I looked down. The boy’s long fingers were wrapped around my wrist like a cuff. His fevered touch felt hotter than human standards, hot enough to make me sweat like I was standing beside a radiator but not hot enough to burn.
“I must be mistaken, Eli,” the boy who held my arm said in a monotone. “Correct me. Did I hear you say you wanted to taste the flesh of this girl?”
A hush descended on us. It had the hairs at the back of my neck rising. How was it possible for the atmosphere to switch from threatening to dangerous? Unable to help myself, I peeked around the new guy’s bulk. Eli and his friends bowed. They all had their right hands on their chests.
“Demitri, I’m sure you misheard me,” Eli said.
So the guy standing between me and the person who said he’d wanted to taste me was named Demitri. I like the sound of his name. Demitri. So strong, yet rolls off the tongue. Definite yum factor.
“So, you imply I made a mistake?” Demitri demanded.
“No!” Eli lifted his gaze. “I did no such thing. I simply wanted to show the girl the consequences of breaking curfew.”
“Hey!” I yelled. “Don’t talk about me like I’m not here!”
Demitri ignored my protest and continued to address Eli. “So, you threatened to taste her flesh.” His fingers tightened their grip around my wrist. “In the interest of investigating this matter further, I invoke the Silence.”
All six students gasped, passing surprised glances at one another.
Before I could ask about what was going on, Demitri yanked me down the hall toward the library. But why there? Oh, maybe we were getting my things. No, wait, he couldn’t have known about that. Everything was too confusing now.
Eli and the others didn’t try to stop us when we passed them. Demitri’s cold command must have carried power. Handsome and powerful, never a bad combination on a guy.
We reached the heavy double doors in seconds. He jerked one open effortlessly. I’d needed all my strength just to squeeze through that same door earlier. To him, the thick wood might as well have been cardboard. I raised an eyebrow and mentally listed the benefits of going to gym class.
“Why are we here?” I asked after my curiosity overpowered my worry. I’d almost forgotten how frightened I’d been right before Demitri showed up. I wasn’t above accepting help from strangers. Especially from gorgeous dark-haired strangers with hot hands and wide shoulders.
Demitri kept going, tugging me along, snaking his way deeper into the library. I had to take two steps for every stride his legs made. I tried to stay directly behind him, praying we didn’t slam into anything.
He stopped suddenly and I collided with him. It felt like slamming into a wall.
“Hey,” I said, momentarily stunned. “A little warning would be nice!”
He faced me, and I gasped. His eyes resembled a starless night, deep and endless. Their intensity drilled through me without pity, seeming to expose all my secrets. I felt naked and flustered beneath his gaze.
“You could have died back there,” he warned.
A lump of panic rebuilt itself in my throat.

Sandra Madera: Restraint Trilogy and her wonderful short stories

After reading two short stories, Weeping Willow Part 1 & 2, I felt like I discovered a hidden treasure through my Nook. I absolutely loved Weeping Willow. It can be difficult for a reader to enjoy a short story, but Sandra Madera does an awesome job writing them.
I wanted to read more of her books so I added her two other short stories to my Nook, Sangre Falls and Overboard. Sandra Madera impressed me with these books. I like the fact that all her stories were completely different. From Weeping Willow stories about Elves. Sangre Falls story about a vampire who sees the dead and Overboard  a  mystery that keeps you guessing.

It is wonderful to read stories from an author who's very versatile in her writing.

Here is a link to her short stories. Sandra created book trailers for each one.

Summary: ~ from Barnes & Noble~

Tragic circumstances bring two sisters, Laura and Linda, to a foreign land where they are stripped of their fortune and are at the mercy of their estranged uncle. However, strange happenings force Laura to believe their current situation was no accident. Something is after her.
After the abrupt death of her father, Laura Carter and her sister Linda, are shipped off to England by her uncle they barely know. They are taken to a large house in Annesley to begin a life of service.  When Laura becomes a governess to a young boy named Marcus, she begins to experience strange things in the night...horrible things.
Creatures in the night. Bite marks on her body.
Laura is about to discover a secret that has existed in her family for generations...
Something wants to possess her. It wants her blood, but it didn't expect her to resist and lose all restraint.

Review:

Laura is such a strong character. As soon as she figures out what is really happening to her, she chooses to find a way out of her situation. She becomes focused on helping others, making her a protector. She refuses to give up, making her a survivalist. I love the twist and turns this story takes. Not knowing where the story was going to end up made this a great book for me.
I love reading stories that are set in the Victorian era and I'm a huge fan of  classic literature. Being a fan of Sandra Madera's short stories, I was excited to read this novel. This story captured my attention right from the beginning. Tragedy, mystery, suspense, survival, horror and just a touch of romance. I do not normally read horror books but I have read a few. I happened to just read Bram Stoker's Dracula, just a couple of months before reading Restraint. I love the fact that Restraint gave me the feeling I had while reading Dracula. These vampires are not your typical modern day vampires(beautiful and hot). I don't have a problem with beautiful, hot vampires I love to read about them too. But  It was refreshing to read a story that resembles the classic vampire. These vampires can seem beautiful when they want to, but when the evil in them shows, it is then the vampire is seen for who they really are.

Stranded in a foreign land, two sisters, Linda and Laura are on a quest to regain their fortune and rebuild their once normal life. However, the past they fought so hard to flee has caught up with them and each must face the consequences of their actions. For Linda, the price may be too high.
Something seeks her demise.
After the horrifying experience of fleeing for their lives, Linda Carter and her sister, Laura, are on a mission to reclaim what is rightfully theirs. however, they never expected their past to follow them.
Betrayed by those closest to them and left at the mercy of those they fought to escape, everything they planned goes horribly wrong as Linda is captured by her enemy and held captive in an attempt to lure Laura into a trap.
Can Linda escape without being bitten by the very beast she both feared...and loved?

Review:

A great second book to this trilogy. The book picks up from where Restraint ended. The first book was told in Laura's point of view, this second book is told in Linda's point of view. Linda has to now step up and be the strong one. She has to come to terms of what has happened. She faces the ugly truth of her family's history and that pure evil exist. Lament has more action, suspense, horror. Can Linda or Laura ever find happiness or love? One thing is for sure their lives will never be the same again.

Summary~from the book cover~

There is need...and then there is Fate
Being destined to become some kind of supernatural electrical outlet isn't exactly awesome--especially when Alexandria's "other half" is everywhere she goes.  Seth's in her training room, outside her class, and keeps showing up in her bedroom--so not cool.  Their connection does have some benefits, like staving off her nightmares of the tragic showdown with her mother, but it has no effect on what Alex feels for the forbidden, pure-blooded Aiden.  Or what he will do--and sacrifice--for her.
When daimons infiltrate the Covenants and attack students, the gods send furies--lesser gods determined to eradicate ant threat to the Covenants and to the gods, and that includes the Apollyon...and Alex. And if that and hordes of aether-sucking monsters didn't blow bad enough, a mysterious threat seems willing to do anything to neutralize Seth, even if that means forcing Alex into servitude...or killing her.
When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone.

Review:

I so need the next book, Deity.  I want it  NOW!! What an ending!! I laughed, I cried, found myself holding my breath, I even banged my head with the book and talked out loud when frustrated or mad (I think my family is getting use to my outburst with great books). Now I do not know who I want Alex to end up with. I grew to love Seth! My heart is broken in two for Aiden and Seth.
I feel that Alex is a strong girl. I really like her.  She's a girl doing the best she can with, what life has dealt her. I just want her to be happy. She has so many obstacles in her way and major choices to make, it seems impossible. She is in love with Aiden who is a Pure. There are serious consequences for a half blood to be involved with a Pure. She is emotionally connected with Seth, who comes off as a jerk a lot of the time, then ends up being there for her when she needs it most. And the Council (which most of them do not like half bloods) puts Alex on trial, to question her involvement with the increase daimon attacks.

I own the eBook versions of  Daimon and Half Blood. I love the Covenant Series and I love the art work on the covers. I had to buy them to add to my book shelf.

Summary ~ from Barnes & Noble~

The Last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams.  As a Luxen, an alien life form on earth, human girls are...well, fun.  But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane.  Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.
Bethany can't deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson.  And even though boys aren't a complication she wants, she can't stay away from him.  Still, whenever they lock eyes, she's drawn in. Captivated, Lured, Loved.
Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence...and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can't stop risking everything for one human girl.  Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

Review:

A great novella / prequel to Obsidian. I am so glad that Jennifer wrote Dawson and Bethany's story. Humor, suspense and emotional. Knowing the outcome, did make it difficult for me to read because I so wanted a happy ending for them. Yes, I was sad, I just love them as a couple. I instantly loved Dawson. He is so sweet and a great brother. Bethany is a nice girl and loves her little brother. They both have a lot in common but yet are so different. Getting to know Dawson and Bethany, and learning more about their story, helped me to understand Daemon's reactions to Katy in Obsidian. I now have several theories about this story and where it is going. I hope a couple of my theories are right.

♥Showing off my Grandson♥

Getting ready to work on reviews (that are overdue) I am determined to get caught up by tonight, even if I have to stay up and drink a lot of coffee :P

Just would like to take a moment to share a few videos of Hunter. I live very far away and only get to interact with my grandson through Skype, videos and phone calls. Can't wait to fly out to see him(and of course my daughter and son-in law)

The first one is very short and shows Hunter trying out the guitar and singing a song.

The second video is Hunter discussing with his mom about his trip to the doctor. Hunter was fine getting his finger poked, he did not get upset at all. But when he had to pee in a cup, he thought that was so cool. He was very upset when the nurse took it away.

The third one is Hunter humming while he helps mommy clean.

Summary~ from Barnes&Noble~

Elly's back and dishing up more magic!
Elly Blair is finally getting the hang of her magic skills. That is, until the National Organization for Magic introduces her to a new type of magic: potions.
Each year before the fall equinox, a special potion must be given to the residents of Mystic Hollow, Kentucky. But when the spell goes awry, Elly fears she's to blame.
Handsome investigator Tom Owenton is back in town, but this time he's stripped of his badge. With Tom's arrival in Mystic Hollow, the Organization steps in and decides to shut down the entire town.

Review:

In this second book, Elly is now sure that she wants to stay in Mystic Hollow. She likes to cook and do magic to help the customers that may need it. Elly's grandma officially retires and decides to travel. Her grandma has full confidence in Elly's ability to run the cafe. Elly starts to lose confidence in herself when a spell goes wrong, Again?!
Learning how to cook with magic comes with a great responsibility to the town and she wonders if her grandma made the right decision by leaving so quickly.

There is a lot of suspense, mystery, romance, humor and a bit of magic that shakes things up! A "Funtastic" book!! Rose Pressey knows how to give her readers a fun and thrilling time.
Love the interactions among the characters. I laughed out loud many times reading Elly and Mary Jane's conversations. And Elly has that southern girl charm and her strong southern girl ways. I don't want to give away too much, but the mystery that the story has was written really well, I just did not want to stop reading. I had to find out who was responsible and why bad things were happening.

Rose Pressey does a great job writing her stories. In the Mystic Cafe series, Elly has a great best friend, Mary Jane, that helps her run the cafe. Elly also has two good looking men that are in love with her. I love how Rose has created this love triangle between Elly, Rory and Tom.  A great triangle is when the writer makes the reader not know which one is best for the main character in the story. I love both Rory and Tom and I will feel sad for whom ever Ella decides not to chose. Rory and Tom obviously care for Elly alot. Elly is not use to all this attention. She knows she has strong feelings for Rory but questions what her feelings are for Tom.

Witchful Thinking by H.P. Mallory book review, and more....

H.P. Mallory is another great author I have discovered, searching for new books to read for my Nook. I loved reading Witchful Thinking.

Witchful Thinking (Jolie Wilkins #3)
by H.P. Mallory
18 & up
Publisher: Random House
Pub. Date: Feb. 28, 2012
eBook
Rating: ♥♥♥♥♥

Summary ~from goodreads~

Jolie thinks she's see it all, but life continues to spring surprises.  The latest shocker?   She's just been crowned queen of the underworld.  Jolie may possess a rare gift for reanimating the dead, but she doesn't know the first thing about governing disparate factions of supernatural creatures.  She can barely maintain order in her own chaotic personal life, which is heading into a romantic tailspin.
First there's sexy warlock Rand, the love of her life, from whom Jolie is hiding a devastating secret.   Then there's Sinjin, a darkly seductive vampire and Jolie's affection, she must keep her wits about her to balance affairs of state and affairs of her heart.  Overwhelmed, underwhelmed, under pressure, and longing for love, Jolie decides it's time to take charge---and show everyone that this queen won't take jack.

My Review:

This book is the 3rd book in the Jolie Wilkins series. Jolie has been through a lot in such a short time. She decides to keep a journal to to try to make sense of all the crazy things that has happened to her.  In her journal she talks about the journey she has taken that led her to her present state. She is doing her best to cope and she is trying to make decisions that is right for everyone. Witchful Thinking does pick up where it left off from book 2. At first the journal entries seemed repetitive because I have read the first two books, but I ended liking the journals because it shows how much conflict and how difficult Jolie's life has become.
Jolie's love triangle with Rand and Sinjin comes even more complicated. We learn more about key characters in this series. Jolie has always been true to her feelings for Rand. Rands trust in Jolie is tested by the decisions she has to make. Jolie cares for Sinjin and sees him as a best friend, but is not sure if she should trust him. She sees Sinjin meeting up a lot with Mercedes and is confused, and questions his and Mercedes intentions. We also learn more about the Lurkers, who are half vampire and human. It is made clear that the Lurkers have become a bigger threat to everyone in the Underworld.
This book definitely has humor, suspense, romance, mystery and conflict. And it had an ending that made me mad, I wanted to yell out "OMG!". Getting me all worked up at the end of a book is a good thing because it was not what I expected to happen. I so wish I can read the next book now. Where this story is heading only H.P. Mallory knows!
